September 21 – Fatherhood, Gender Equality, and Violence Prevention

This webinar is hosted by the Battered Women’s Justice Project and is open to the public.

PRESENTERS:

Juliana Carlson, A. M., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the School of Social Welfare, Center for Children and Families at the University of Kansas, Humberto Carolo is the Director of Programs at White Ribbon Canada, and Ian DeGeer is a Ph.D. candidate at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo ON, Canada.

DESCRIPTION:

During this webinar presenters Juliana Carlson, Humberto Carolo, and Ian DeGeer will examine the intersection of fatherhood, gender equality and violence prevention. The presentation will start with the framework of primary prevention (stop violence before it starts) and its approach to ending gender-based violence, which predominantly is violence against women and girls by men. Recent primary prevention efforts seeking to end violence against women are increasingly working to engage men to promote gender equality through a variety of strategies. One strategy is fatherhood. Using the findings from studies in the United States and Canada, faculty will examine how men talk about their transition to fatherhood and how fathers talk about gender equality in relation to their parenting and partnering. Faculty will discuss implications of these studies for engaging men and boys in ending gender-based violence and promoting gender equality. They will share specific applications and ask pertinent questions for practitioners and organizations as they work for gender equality and justice, through ending violence against women.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity. Starting in 1991, WRC asked men to wear white ribbons as a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. Since then the White Ribbon has spread to over 60 countries around the world.

WRC works to examine the root causes of gender-based violence and create a cultural shift that helps bring us to a future without violence. The vision of WRC is for a masculinity that embodies the best qualities of being human. WRC believes that men are part of the solution and part of a future that is safe and equitable for all people.

Through education, awareness-raising, outreach, technical assistance, capacity building, partnerships and creative campaigns, White Ribbon is helping create tools, strategies and models that challenge negative, outdated concepts of manhood and inspire men to understand and embrace the incredible potential they have to be a part of positive change.
