January 28- Third Annual Pray for Freedom

prayforfreedom

Join the Global Center for Women and Justice in collaboration with Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) for the third annual Pray for Freedom.

Our communities will gather to pray for freedom for victims of labor and sex trafficking. Partner organizations and community leaders will open the prayer with a worldwide prayer for wisdom, resources, and divine intervention to free captives.

Partner organizations and community leaders will pray for the unique issues of widows, single mothers, refugees, foster kids, immigrants and vulnerable communities because of poverty, gender discrimination, conflict, and violence. The final focus is reducing demand driven by greed, pornography, and violence. The call to action will challenge attendees to recognize victims, understand how we can serve, and engage the local church community in practical responses that make a difference.

January 28 – Freedom Now Fair

freedom-nowfair

Most everyone will agree that we love our San Diego. But in speaking of our community, there must come the acknowledgement that there is a terrible phenomenon taking place both here and across the country. It’s a phenomenon that many are completely unaware of. Even more disturbing is that there are those who are very much aware of it, are profiting from it and/or are indulging in it. The worst part of all of this is that little girls, little boys, women and men are being enslaved and brutalized by it EVERY DAY. Through force, fraud and/or coercion…these human beings are victims of the crime known as HUMAN TRAFFICKING, and San Diego is one of the top 7 cities in America where this is happening.

There is a need to bring the topic of human trafficking down to street level, so that more people are aware of this critical issue facing our society today and that is taking place in our own back yards. In order to help eliminate this tragic injustice, there is a need to change the way the public thinks about this issue as well as a need to empower them with the education and resources in order to become an ally in this mission. With  these things in mind, we are very excited to announce that the Survivor Leader Network of San Diego is moving forward with our 2nd Annual “Freedom NOW Fair” on January 28rd, 2017…WE HAVE MORE WORK TO DO!!!

October 29- Gems Uncovered “Love to Life” Gala Dinner

gems-covered

You are invited to the Gems Uncovered “Love to Life” Gala Dinner on October 29th, 2016!

The evening will showcase what Gems Uncovered is doing to provide support and healing to victims of human trafficking.  Not only will you experience hope through stories shared by some of the women who have graduated from our Diversion Program, but you will understand what it means to continue to bring awareness and financial support to fight this horrible crime against humanity.

Gems Uncovered has pioneered many frontiers over the last five years, starting in 2011 with the mission to bring hope to the women prostituting on the streets of Long Beach.  In 2012 we were blessed to open a Drop In Center – the only one in Long Beach – to welcome girls to a safe place where they are listened too, loved on, and offered help through available services. Today, we have a successful Diversion Program called “Free 2 B Me” as well as Street Outreach Teams in Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Tickets are at a cost of $75 each.  This includes a delicious meal, dessert, fair trade coffee, access to a silent auction, and a night of inspiring hope.

Place: 7th Street Church | 668 N. Obispo Ave., Long Beach, CA 90814
Time: 6PM- 9PM

September 9 – Musical Performance to support Underground Railroad

Kathleen Battle
The Underground Railroad Project

Overview

Soprano Kathleen Battle’s luminous voice has been called “…without qualification, one of the very few most beautiful in the world” (The Washington Post). Yet beyond the glory of her singing, in a career filled with countless accolades, honors and major milestones, what has perhaps distinguished her most is her almost magical ability to create an unwavering emotional bond between herself, her music and her audience.

In this very special performance, the American soprano explores iconic traditional spirituals and the writings of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, accompanied by the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, two narrators and featuring Cal State Fullerton’s University Singers.

“Battle’s pure soprano voice made for a stellar performance. She sang a series of spirituals ranging from ‘Go Down, Moses’ to ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ and infused intense emotion into each song…Last night was an evening to remember.” – DC Metro Theatre Arts

Venue: Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert HallTickets start at $19.00
