Serving Victims of Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking: Intervention

The MECP and AMBER Alert Training and Technical Assistance Program invite you to participate in this month’s webinar entitled, “Serving Victims of Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking- Part 2” with Leslie Briner, Commercial Sexual Exploitation Training and Policy Coordinator for YouthCare. Leslie also operates Notes from the Ground, a training and consulting practice in Seattle, focused on developing resources and capacity to respond to sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. 

Ms. Briner will expand upon last month’s webinar to discuss intervention strategies for victims of sex trafficking. She will also examine how service providers can improve intervention efforts through relationship building, harm reduction and safety planning. Participants are encouraged to review Part I prior to participating in this month’s event.

Participants will: 

* Identify the stages of change among victims who have been sexually exploited
* Identify tools and techniques to improve rapport with victims and properly intervene
* Learn how to discuss safety and incorporate safety planning with victims

About the Presenter 

Leslie Briner has worked in the field of direct services with children, youth and families for eighteen years. She began working in programs serving families experiencing homelessness, youth with developmental disabilities, youth in the foster care system and with commercially sexually exploited (CSE) youth. Leslie served as the Program Director of Youth Services at SAGE (Standing Against Global Exploitation) in San Francisco, CA from 2005 to 2007. After relocating to Seattle to attend graduate school she consulted for the City of Seattle Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Division and developed 40-hour, community-based training and programming to respond to sexually exploited youth.  In 2010, Leslie joined YouthCare. She is charged with implementing the Bridge Continuum of Services for Sexually Exploited Youth in Seattle, WA. 

 Currently, Leslie is the part time Commercial Sexual Exploitation Training and Policy Coordinator for YouthCare and she teaches social work at the University of Washington, School of Social Work. Leslie is board member for the Organization for Prostitution Survivors (OPS) and for Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST). In all aspects of life, Ms. Briner is committed to social justice values and practices. Leslie is originally from the San Francisco, Bay Area. She relocated to Seattle in 2007 and holds a Masters in Social Work (MSW) from the University of Washington.

Human Trafficking is happening here in our own backyards.  As the men of Los Angeles, we’re not willing to let it continue.  Stand up for the voiceless.  Stand against the abusers. Stand together as protectors of the innocent. Stand. It’s that simple.

We meet the 18th of each month at trafficking hotspots across LA. On August 18th we will meet at 555 Pacific Coast Highway, Long Beach, CA 90806. Parking is free in the lot and there is additional street parking if needed.

  • 10:00-11:18 Stand at designated location
  • Walk back to cars and go home

Half the proceeds will be used to resource organizations within the hotspot area and half will be used to continue the fight across LA.

Wear a white shirt and jeans to demonstrate your solidarity. While we prefer for advance RSVP’s for planning purposes you are welcome to just show up on the night of as well if you are able! Event t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event. Event is open to only to men 18 and over.

May 14 – ICAN/DA Sponsored One-Day CSEC Training

ICAN and the District Attorney’s Office are pleased to announce that we are sponsoring a one-day free training on CSEC:  A Collaborative Approach to Human Trafficking.  The seminar is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2015 at the MTA Building from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m.  The below link will provide you with all of the information you need for this seminar and will also allow you to register for the training.  The training is open to the first 200 people who sign-up; others will be put on a wait list in the event that spots open up.  Please note that attendees will have to pay for parking and either bring a lunch or buy one near-by the training venue (there are a number of places to eat near the training site).

This all-day free training has a very full agenda and participants will be able to learn from key experts about the current response to human trafficking victims and available resources for these victims.  Speakers will also discuss how we can best move forward in our efforts to prevent human trafficking and provide appropriate services.  Morning greetings will be provided by District Attorney Jackie Lacey, Sheriff Jim McDonald and ICAN Executive Director, Deanne Tilton.
