Somaly Mam is Cambodian and a survivor of sex slavery. She doesn’t know her actual age or her real name – she spent many years in the horrors of Cambodian brothels.

But she escaped her captors, and since then has aided in the rescue of thousands of women and children. She founded an NGO that rescues, recovers and empowers victims of sex trafficking and serves as an advocate and the face of the cause worldwide.

Somaly Mam has been honored as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People; a Glamour Woman of the Year; a recipient of the CNN Hero Award, one of Fortune Magazine’s Most Powerful Women, recipient of the World Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child as well as a Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
